The Munich Airport is about 40 kilometers north of Munich. A taxi ride will cost about EUR 50-60. Trains and buses can serve as good, inexpensive alternatives (see below).
Trains leave before 4 a.m. and continue service until after midnight.
A suburban train (called S-Bahn, but with specific lines called S1 and S8)
leaves every 10 minutes directly from the airport underground station, taking
one of two different routes to the city. The route of S1 from the airport goes
south and enters the city center from the west (time to Main Train Station is 41
minutes) whereas the route of S8 heads south and enters the city center from the
east (time to Main Train Station is 39 minutes). The cost for a one-way ticket
is EUR 8.80 per person. KEEP IN MIND that a day-ticket (for one person OR a
group of up to five people) might be the best deal if you do any other travel in
Munich that day.
Note: S-Bahn trains arrive in (and depart from) the underground portion of
the Munich Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof).
Bus service leaves from the airport for the Main Train Station (Munich
Hauptbahnhof) every 20 minutes between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Travel time is 45-50
minutes and cost is EUR 12 per person.
How to save time when coming from Salzburg to the Munich airport:
From Salzburg, take a regional (RE or RB) train or one of the IC trains that
stops at Munich Ostbahnhof (a.k.a. Munich East). You can get off the train at
platform 5-6 (of Munich Ostbahnhof) and board the S8 train from the SAME
platform for the 30-minute journey to Munich Airport.
How to save time when coming from the airport and travelling to Salzburg:
From the airport, it is best to take an S8 train to Munich Ostbahnhof
(arriving at platform 1-2). Transfer to platform 7-8 (there is an elevator at
platform 1-2, but NO elevator at platform 7-8) for the connecting RE, RB or IC
train that goes directly to Salzburg at least once an hour.
How to save money in either direction (from/to Salzburg):
Ask for a "Bayern Ticket" at the airport or in Salzburg (note: In Salzburg
main train station, this ticket can ONLY be purchased at the DB Railroad
Counters in the main hallway and NOT in the Austrian Railroad Travel Center).
This ticket restricts you to using regional trains (S-Bahn, RE and RE trains are
covered, but NOT IC- or EC-trains) and does not work on weekdays before 9 a.m.
One person can leave Salzburg on a Bayern Ticket and travel all the way to the
airport for EUR 21. A group of up to five persons costs only EUR 29.
