The City of Dachau and its residents know you will probably just pass through on your way to the Concentration Camp Memorial. Indeed, many people have visited this memorial since the end of World War II to gain a better understanding of the time when the Nazi government imprisoned and persecuted all opposition, both political and ideological. As someone who has visited this particular memorial many times, I am enclosing the information sheet that I distributed (before taking groups to Dachau) at the bottom of this homepage.
If you have time after visiting the memorial, I encourage you to walk through the city of Dachau before going back to Munich. If you hadn't been to the memorial, it might seem like any other small city in Central Europe. In the spring of 1985, the "Wall Street Journal" published an article by that described the feelings of Dachau residents and how they deal with the duality of the name of their city.
The Memorial at Dachau is open all days except Monday. The hours of visitation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Allow 4-5 hours (from the time you depart Munich until you return) for the trip. It can be reached within 45 minutes by using public transportation: 20 minutes on the S-Bahn, followed by 20 minutes on a bus.
Specific directions to the Memorial from the main train station in Munich: go to the main exit by track 26 (in the main hall) and descend down to the S-Bahn platforms (two levels below ground). Board any train on the S-2 line (normally from track 2) that states its destination as Dachau or Petershausen. The trip on the S-Bahn takes 22 minutes to Dachau. From Dachau station, bus 726 (preferred) goes directly past the Memorial entrance. An alternative is bus 724 (direction Dachau, Krautergarten), which stops at KZ-Gedenkstaette Parkplatz, the parking lot of the Memorial.
The EurAide office in Munich hands out specific information concerning S-Bahn and bus departures upon request. On many days, it is also possible to join a group that leaves the Munich Train Station (Hauptbahnhof) and visits the Memorial in an English-language tour. Stop by EurAide for more information and/or to register.
