Rail Passes Tourist Information Tours & Excursions Rail Pass Validation |
Most railpasses issued outside of Europe are treated as "open" tickets that can be "validated" during the six month period after issue. Before validation in Europe (a function performed by a railroad official and NOT BY YOU), write down on a sheet of paper the starting date in the European format [examples: START 25 March or START 25 03 (day followed by month)]. Then go to a ticket counter and present the railpass with your passport and the sheet of paper. In larger stations, you may be referred to a specific window.
If you arrive in Europe and don't intend to start rail travel immediately, consider going to the train station a day or two in advance so you can avoid last-minute surprises that could bog you down. This validation is the responsibility of the traveler and must be done before boarding the first train of your journey to avoid costly penalties.
Note: Some railpasses (e.g. "Prague Excursion Pass", Car and Railpass Combinations, etc.) avoid this problem by being issued as a pre-validated document (i.e., no validation is required). In general, you can quickly determine if you must validate the railpass by looking in the upper, right-hand corner of the pass. Normally, the space set aside for the "issuing office" is filled in, so look below it and see if a space for "validating office" exists. If this space is present and empty, you must take the railpass to a counter for validation. Prague Excursion Passes have no space set aside for a "validating office" and are ready-to-use. Railpasses associated with Car/Rail Combinations are issued with a validation stamp in the box marked "validating office" (probably a stamp that is identical to that of the issuing office) and require no further processing before use.
